Do your joints Snap, Crackle, & Pop!

Sound Familiar?

Whether its the morning stretch, bending to put your shoes on, or pulling back the covers for the evening,  your body may make the sound of a popular cereal tag line: Snap, Crackle, & Pop!  Typically the popping, grinding or crackling noises in the joints are usually nothing to worry about, but often times people experience pain or swelling when this occurs-and this is cause for concern.

The exact reason our joints pop and snap isn't fully understood, but there are several theories which make sense, one being that arthritic Joints often make grinding or cracking noises that can be heard when the joint is moved.

Does this "sound" like you or someone you know?  It may be as joint pain/concerns and disorders are a leading cause of doctor visits.

As seen below, the Mayo Clinic study confirm that 34% of why we go to the doctor are for Osteoarthritis & Joint Disorders.  You will also see that 24% visits are for back problems.

So what can you do to not only stop the snap, crackle, and pop, but also aid in the swelling, aches, and pain that may also come along with joint disorders?

Lifestyle changes that may ease joint pain...

Your lifestyle and the things you do can greatly influence how much joint pain you experience.

Which of these changes can you make to improve your own joint health?

Lose weight. Carrying extra weight can be part of the cause of joint pain or at least aggravate it. For each 10 pounds of body weight, your body experiences an extra 30 to 70 pounds of pressure on joints in the feet, ankles and knees with each step you take.

Start doing non-impact exercises. Walking, swimming or water aerobics, yoga and bicycling are exercises that will not put undue stress on your joints. Exercising also  releases endorphins that ease pain as well as improve your mood. Research has shown that only 30 minutes of exercise each day can ease the pain of arthritis.

Be aware of your posture as you sit, stand and walk. Proper posture can make a huge difference in preventing unneeded stress on your spine and lower back. It also reduces neck strain.

Eat a healthy diet. People often do not realize how what they eat can affect their health. Add more fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet while reducing high-calorie, high-fat choices. Reports indicate certain foods can reduce joint pain. These foods include salmon due to the omega-3 fatty acids, extra virgin olive oil for the polyphenols it contains, as well  as ginger and turmeric because they have anti-inflammatory properties.
